Installment sales

Take payments for a property or business over several years, and the gain can be taxed over those years too. A $300,000 gain paid evenly over 3 years may put about $100,000 of gain on each year's return. You also charge interest and report the sale on Form 6252. Inventory and dealer property usually do not qualify.

Good for: Anyone selling property or a business who will be paid over several years.
